Merry Christmas und Frohe Weihnacht!
For some reason, our family hits the church every christmas eve, before dinner and before we open presents. I am not even sure why. I suppose it's just a family tradition. I guess it just forces us to stop and consider in our busy world, maybe even thank our family for being there and just be in an environment, where everyone is gathered to listen and sing as one person, irregardless of problems and prejudice. As a kid, when I stopped sleeping at least a week prior to christmas eve, because of my excitement, I used to get super annoyed at going to church, because why go, when it just prolongs the time until I get to unwrap presents right?
For a couple of years, we stopped going just because one of us was always sick, but as far as I remember started going again last year. We were in Germany and found this really old church, where a mass had just started - I think it was built around 1200 or something like that. We didn't even mean to stay for the mass, but decided to anyway. It was decorated really nicely and the acoustics were unbelievable. Everyone was dressed really well and the whole experience was incredibly touching. Today, we went again to a German mass and we didn't sing the following song, which made me realize how important this one particular song was for me and for it to be a proper christmas ceremony. Tsk! How can they just cut that out! *aiyoo*

"Es ist ein Ros entsprungen aus einer Wurzel zart,
wie uns die Alten sungen, von Jesse kam die Art
und hat ein Bluemlein bracht mitten im kalten Winter
wohl zu der halben Nacht."

[Tune]
Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen
Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen
